Laila Meachin (North Ward)
I have lived in Henley all my life and my parents also live here. I went to Badgemore Primary, Gillotts Secondary and Henley College. I have two young daughters at Valley Road School and I am involved with the PTA there. I have worked in graphic design and publishing for 20 years, ranging from small specialist companies to international publishers and for 5 years as a successful freelance Project Manager. I also have a degree in architecture.
During this time I spent five years as a South Oxfordshire Housing Association (SOHA) Tenants’ Forum member and was a founder member of the Henley Area SOHA Tenants Association. I was a leaseholder and so only a tenant in a very small capacity, but I believe in social housing and wanted to get involved.
Before I became involved with the Henley Residents Group (HRG) I had been very impressed by its Councillors’ commitment and hard work. In 2009 I became a member and started to work on campaigns. I am on the HRG Exec Cttee and have been Membership Secretary and also Chair the Comms/Website Group. I design HRG’s publicity material. My council duties include being on the Finance, Strategy & Management Cttee, Vice Chair of the Planning Cttee, Chair of the Traffic Advisory Cttee, and Chair of the Air Quality Group.
I enjoy talking to people that I meet around ‘my town’ on all levels and use the information gained to help form my views as Councillor. I love Henley and I love what HRG does – its political independence, and the people that are involved with it. I want to do as much as I can to keep that going – especially in these difficult times.
