District Council Report by Kellie Hinton

Report by District Councillor Kellie Hinton to the Full Town Council on Tuesday 30.7.2019

Clean Air Day

On Thursday 20th June 2019, it was Clean Air Day. Led by SODC officer Carmen Martinez, the district launched its anti-idling campaign – Turn It Off! in Henley on Market Day. The two hour launch was successful, with town and districts councillors attending as well as the Mayor and members of Henley in Transition and Clean Air for Henley. If you would like any further information or a bumper sticker, these are available inside the Town Hall.

Motion for Affordable and Sustainable Housing

Robin Bennett (Green Party) is the cabinet member for Economic Development and Regeneration. I was delighted to second his written motion at the Full Council meeting, which was supported by a majority of councillors. The motion was as follows;

“Council notes that, increasingly, the only type of housing in our area that is genuinely affordable to young families, key workers, and the under-40s in general is social rent housing.

Council asks officers to prepare a report for Cabinet on ways to use council powers and resources to deliver more high-quality, environmentally sustainable, and genuinely affordable housing, at social rent or similar cost. This should include ways to keep such properties genuinely affordable in the long term and ways to release and access low-cost suitable land for projects such as – but not limited to – self-build, housing co-ops and community land trusts, as well as projects owned, let or operated by the council itself. ”

SODC Local Plan

There was an SODC Full Council meeting on Thursday 18th July. It lasted 4.5 hours! At this meeting, the local plan was debated and a motion was put forward by the cabinet. My colleagues in HRG, along with the Labour councillors and Conservative councillors voted against the motion. I voted for the motion, put forward by Liberal Democrat, Independent and Green Party councillors. The motion was the following;

Training

Since being elected, I have taken part in 4 different training days or sessions for the relevant committees that I am on and also to improve myself as a councillor. I was particularly interested in the training given for licensing and licensing acts.
